Thirteen tracks wind their way through the Jim Barnett Reserve. You’ll walk through stands of native bush, past a towering ancient totara and even see some glow worms along the way.
The tracks vary in length – from just 600 metres to 3.6 kilometres, so it’s easy to find one that suits your schedule. They’re all easy walking, with just a few short steep sections that can be handled by people of most fitness levels.
Tawa, mangeao and rewarewa dominate the canopy, but you’ll find plenty of totara, rimu, kahikatea, matai and miro as well. There’s no shortage of native bush birds as well. During your walk, you’ll likely see and hear tui, makomako (bell birds), fantail and even a tiny grey warbler. Because our birdlife is precious, dogs are discouraged in the reserve.
If you want to make a night of it, there’s a camping site which has a tap, toilets and picnic tables.
The tracks are shared with the Waikato River Trails, so it pays to keep an eye out for cyclists.
