This award-winning trail takes you along the banks of the Waikato River. It includes the internationally acclaimed Blue Spring, where the water is so pure, it suppliesa round 60% of New Zealand’s bottled water.
It takes around 90 minutes to cover the 4.7 kilometre walk (or three hours return). The terrain varies from easy walking to back country trekking. It’s mainly an easy walk, with some steeper areas, and some stiles and steps.
Along the way you’ll pass beautiful waterfalls, the crystal clear waters and abundant native birdlife. Te Waihou is totally spring fed. The reason for the blue colour and amazing clarity of the Waihou River and its spring source is the high optical purity of the water.
If time isn’t on your side, there’s a much shorter option off the Leslie Road carpark that takes you directly to the Blue Springs in just 15 minutes or so.
Please note that no dogs are permitted on this walkway. Swimming is discouraged as it is harmful to the environment.
